Abstract

The study of the general geology and the distribution of potential toxic elements around Kampung Damar, Kuala Krai, Kelantan was conducted in an area of approximately 25 km2. The objective of this study is to produce a geological map of and to produce a spatial distribution map on the potentially toxic element of residential topsoil around Kampung Damar area. For producing geological map, field studies had been conducted at the Kampung Damar area, such as geomorphology, structural geology, and lithology, as well as laboratory works such as petrographic analysis was done to determine the type of the rock. ArcGIS 10.1 software was used to produce the geological map of Kampung Damar, Kuala Krai. The geological map produced, consist of three different lithology, which are phyllite, ignimbrite and sedimentary rock, as well as alluvium was also been observed at in the study area. The sedimentary rock consist of carbonaceous mudstone, greywacke sandstone and shale. While, for the study of potential toxic elements in the residential topsoil around Kampung Damar, Kuala Krai, nine samples were collected from different residential area around Kampung Damar, Kuala Krai. Elemental analysis was done by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Specrometer (ICP-OES) to determine the concentration of Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn in the Kampung Damar area. Spatial distribution map for Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb and Zn was done by using interpolation technique, Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) of ARCGIS 10.1 software. It was found that the concentration of Pb exceeds the screening limit suggested by United State Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA).
