Abstract

In this study, Rn-222 concentrations were measured within three different room sizes in an academic building, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan Jeli Campus. There are no data or researches have been done in the study area. The objective of this study was to monitor the Rn-222 concentration and to study the relationship of environmental factors (pressure, humidity and temperature) on indoor Rn-222 concentration. Continuous radons monitor which Radon Sentinel model 1030 had been used in this study. The Rn-222 concentration was measured for 10 days from 8.00 am to 3.00 pm at each research area. Three different rooms that have different room sizes at the same level in an academic building, UMK Jeli Campus have been selected. A Pearson correlation was used to analyze these variables based on three rooms. The average values of Rn-222 concentrations for BK 6, BK 7 and BK 8 were found at 0.29 pCi/L, 0.31 pCi/L and 0.72 pCi/L respectively. BK 8 (277.97m3) in size has the higher Rn-222 concentrations than BK 6 (440.98m3) and BK 7 (292.67m3). Room with lower volume has the higher Rn-222 concentration than room with higher volume. Rn-222 concentration readings for each three rooms are below the Environmental Protection Agency action level (4pCi/L). Rn-222 concentration is influenced by temperature for BK 6 and pressure for BK 7 but there is no correlation in BK 8. This mean Rn-222 concentration is independence to environmental factors but it was influence by other factors such as ventilation system, weathers and building materials.
