Abstract

A recent catastrophic flood event occurred at end of year 2014 has create big impact on the environment and people in the study area, Kuala Krai, Kelantan. The flood is causing sudden great damage; the city of Kuala Krai is completely flooded. This research is focus on the geochemistry of the top soil in the Kuala Krai. The method of studying the geochemistry of the top soil involving the pH and elemental analysis of Na, Ca, Fe, K and Mg by using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry, ICP-OES. The data obtained shows high concentration of iron (Fe) elements in all the sampled location. The study area also shows a low pH value which suggested it has acidic properties. Several factors may cause the acidity in the soil sample such as high precipitation rate at Kuala Krai. The concentration of the other elements such as sodium (Na) only present in low concentration. The moisture content of the sample also investigated. The geology of the area need to be study in much more details. There are also abundance of quartzite, a metamorphic rock at the Kuala Krai. As a conclusion the area has high concentration of iron in all of the sample but not in excess concentration thus making the area possible for agricultural activity.
