Abstract

This research was a preliminary study on evaluation of Triphasia trifolia to understand the toxicity level and to introduce it as an ingredient for replacing organic solvent in conventional nail polish. Series of test were conducted to determine cytotoxicity activity using Brine Shrimp Lethality (BSLT) bioassay and heavy metal content using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The toxicity were determined at certain concentration of extract (250, 500, 1000 ul/ml) against the percentage of brine shrimp mortality. The mortality was observed for 12 and 24 hours and the result shown that the extract have LC50 values of 1072.23 ul/ml and 505.44 ul/ml respectively. The heavy metal content result shown a negative reading of lead (Pb) element. The result show that T.trifolia is not toxic and nail polish was developed using T.trifolia juice as the main ingredient. Production of natural nail polish ingredient from T.trifolia was carried out and was found to be alternative. Further research can be done through advance technology to have more accurate and reliable data.
