Abstract

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) has becoming one of the most important commodities in Malaysia. Grafting as plant propagating technique was adapted to increase as well as to improve the yield and growth of cassava. The purpose of this study was to access the compatibility of the grafts and the vegetative growth of grafted union of five different clones of cassava as rootstocks with Manihot glaziovii Muell Arg. (Ceara rubber) as scion. The experiment was conducted at Agropark in Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Jeli, Kelantan. All plant materials were collected from several places within the district of Jeli, Kelantan. L-shaped grafting was applied for the five different clones of M. esculenta with M. glaziovii, with comparison to the Control (non-grafted plants) of each M. esculenta clone. The performance of the plants' growth was observed for ten weeks. After ten weeks, the averages of the variables were assessed and compared. M. esculenta clone from Kampung Ayer Lanas, Jeli was observed to be the most superior for the characteristics assessed which are plant height, number of leaves and length of leaves.
