Abstract

Food recall is the process of removing the contaminated product which can cause harm to the consumer. This research was conducted to investigate the current recall program status in food product in Kuantan, Pahang. A qualitative approach is employed using questionnaires survey method on 70 participants from Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and also food industry companies at Kuantan area, Pahang. The food product recalls program is not applied by most of the participants. Most of the company participants (57%) did not apply this program because they had never heard about this. The regulatory authority must give exposure and guidelines about food product recall programme knowledge. These guidelines would minimize the cost of recall activity. The companies also create food recall procedure to remove unsafe food. Food product recall management is the final step of traceability system in a company. The strength of food recall activity practiced in Malaysia are found to be the communication among food industries, authorities, media mass and consumers as well as the strictness of the competent authority such as the Ministry of Health (MOH).
