Abstract

Plants have some crucial benefits instead of supplying oxygen to human being which urges many researcher or medicinal practices to reveal the potential of various plants that possess antibacterial agent. There were ten selected of local plants were screened for potential antibacterial activity (Andrographis paniculata, Chromoldena odorata, Piper sermentosum, Mimosa pudica, Cymbopogon nardus, Morinda citrifolia, Eurycoma longifolia, Gynura procumbens, Orthosiphon stamineus, and Melastoma malabathricum). In this preliminary investigation, the part of plants used mainly leaves and stem varies according to plant species. All the plants were extracted in 70% of methanol solution and screened by using well diffusion method to be tested on four strains of Gram-negative bacteria which are Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas sp., Salmonella sp., and Vibrio sp. Chromolaena odorata extract was the most potential antibacterial agent which inhibited all the tested bacterial Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of all plants extract against E. coli was obtained by using two-fold dilution method. The most significant value of MIC was showed by E. longifolia and A. paniculata at 500mg/mL. This finding revealed that most of the tested plants can be used as antibacterial agents for aquaculture uses.
