Effect of pineapple leaf (ananas comosus l.) and false water willow (andrographis paniculata l.) extract in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in kambing katjang goat (capra hircus)

Abstract

To investigate the effectiveness of herbal anthelmintic against gastrointestinal nematodes (Haemonchus contortus), two types of plant which is pineapple (Ananas comosus) and false water willow (Andrographis paniculata) were used in the experiment. Twelve goats infected with haemonchosis were selected based on EPG count and divided into 4 groups each consists of 3. There were four treatment which are Ananas comosus extract (100mg/ kg body weight), Andrographis paniculata extract (300mg/ kg body weight), synthetic anthelmintic (Chanaverm) and control treatment. The extracts were administered on day 0 orally with single dose and the faecal egg count (EPG) was determined in goats on day 3, 15 and 30. The efficacy of alcaholic extract of 2 plants which is Ananas comosus and Andrographis paniculata in controlling gastrointestinal nematodes in goat had declined significantly (p<0.01) to low levels compare to control group. Andrographis paniculata showed efficacy at dose of 300mg/ kg body weight on day 3 at EPG count below 300 compare to Ananas comosus at dose of 100mg/ kg body weight that showed EPG count below 300 on day 15. Chanaverm also showed significant effect within several days after treatment compare to day 0. In conclusion, the use of leaves of Ananas comosus and Andrographis paniculata as an indigenous traditional medicine have showed significant anthelmintic activity.
