Abstract

This study was conducted during the period from 10 November 2012 to 19 March 2013 to estimate the number of weed seeds bank of two different soil conditions, high land and low land. High land soil samples were taken from Kuala Krai. Kelantan, while the low land soil samples were taken from Tumpat, Kelantan. Soil samples were taken from three different depths of 1 cm, 4 cm and 8 cm respectively. The numbers of germinated weed seedlings were recorded everyday and then the weeds were removed from the germination tray. The germination index of the weeds from different depths was calculated. Results revealed that the numbers of weeds that were germinated from high land and low land soil samples showed no significant difference. The total number of weed seedlings counted on high land soil was 6, 393 and that of low land soil was 6, 054. The mean germination of high land and low land was also similar, having the values of 55.85 for high land and 56.24 for low land. The highest germination index of both high land and low land soil samples was from the depth of 4 cm, and the lowest was from soil depth of 8 cm.
