Abstract

Groundwater quality is almost globally important for human consumption and changing in its quality can have serious consequences. This study was aimed to determine the physicochemical and microbiological parameters on groundwater at SK Pendok and SMK Batu Melintang. The assessment of groundwater quality is made through calculating the Water Quality Index (WQI). Then, groundwater quality in SK Pendok and SMK Batu Melintang has been compared with water quality standard from World Health Organization (WHO) and National Guideline for Raw Drinking Water Quality from Ministry of Health (MOH). The water samples were collected once a month started from July until October. The standard method has been used to analysis groundwater quality. The different physicochemical parameters such as pH, temperature, conductivity, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen (DO), total suspended solid (TSS), BOD, COD and NH3-N has been determined. Trace minerals content and faecal coliform (Esherichia coli) were also analysed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Gram-staining method respectively. From the result, the average WQI value shows the groundwater quality is slightly polluted and classified in Class Ill at both school with the average WQI value at SK Pendok is 72.4 and SMK Batu Melintang is 71.5. The assessment of ground water quality is important in evaluating the suitability of the water for drinking water.
